    Google webcrawl error

    Hello all,

Google has reported a 404 error during its webcrawl but I cannot find the link on my site. I have exported my site and searched using notepad text editor, but no result. I have used various link checkers with no result.

This is the reported bad link from Google:
    http://www.competitiveheatingsupplies.co.uk/acatalog/index.html

index.html is my homepage. I do not know why it is referenced after acatalog?

Can anyone advise how I can find where this is referenced?
    Regards,

    Keith

    Hi Keith.

'http://www.competitiveheatingsupplies.co.uk/acatalog/index.html' is the default name for your 'Online Catalogue' index page.

If you click on 'Online Catalogue' in your content tree in Actinic then click 'Page Settings', you'll be able to see what this page is currently called.

My guess is that you've changed the name of this page to something other than 'index.html' after Google has indexed it.

    Hope this helps.

The simplest way around this is to keep the catalog homepage as index.html not shop.html as you have changed it to.

You could either rename it again to index.html and put a permanent redirect from shop.html to index.html or wait until Google catches up.

        Thanks for your replies:

        But:
The online store page is shop.html and always has been.
The website homepage is index.html and always has been. This is checked as 'use as website homepage' on the 'General' tab.

This error was shown by Google on the 21st January. Google has crawled my site many times before this; I have not made any changes to the page names.

        Any other ideas please.
        Regards,

        Keith

          Hi Keith.

Have done a little digging for you and found the following:

On 28 Dec 2007 03:53:00 GMT, google cached some of the pages on your site.

At this point in time, your site had a link called "Information Pages". (It was situated on your site between "Contact Us" and "Terms & Conds".)

The URL for this link (start to imagine a drum roll now) was:

          http://www.competitiveheatingsupplie...log/index.html

Google may well have crawled your site many times since finding this link but it doesn't mean that it has updated its index. In time it will naturally disappear.
