    Hosting

    Hi all, first post here.

We currently run Actinic Business V8 on fast hosts, but after all my research it seems it doesn't work properly (the whole separate SSL folder bit).

I want to move to a new hosting provider. I've looked around and it seems that 1&1 Linux business package (shared) with a dedicated SSL. Does anyone else use this particular package?

more to the point, does it have/do i need to be able to install my own CGI programs to make V8 work properly?

Is there a disadvantage to using Linux over windows? Will it still support the EPOS systems when we eventually decide to get them?

Does it have external domain support so that i can leave my domains on 123reg and just point them at my new site?

I tried 1&1 sales hotline, The first person told me categorically that actinic V8 would work. The second, that it would not!

Thanks very much for any information you can give.

Hi Matthew. V8 will definitely work - I have many sites on 1and1 linux. I have only used shared SSL with them and really have no need for a full SSL cert - I don't download cc details.

Linux is definitely preferred over windows hosting - there's many other horror stories around to do with setting up windows servers - although they do work.

You don't need to install your own cgis - Actinic handles the perl scripting.

External domain support - sorry no idea - best to ask 1and1.
EPOS - no idea - check with Actinic.

      Thanks drounding

      Thats really helpful.

I just realized as long as the site works, the EPOS systems should integrate with it.

In regards to the SSL, if you have a shared ssl, doesn't that mean that customers are redirected to a different URL for secure stuff?

      e.g. secured-url.com/mydomain

thats exactly what i want to get away from.

SSL - yes, then you will need your own cert.

But are you only considering taking cc detrails yourself for downloading and processing? A PSP would be better, no PCI-DSS compliance issues:

Agree with Duncan about PSPs for taking payments. Definitely something you should be looking at.

Does it have external domain support so that i can leave my domains on 123reg and just point them at my new site?
yes. That's exactly what I do.
