    Improving Snapshot Times

    Bonkers!

Having decided to change the layout on one of my sites I licensed a new site in MS 8.5.0 and imported the snapshot. Did some work and created a new snapshot - the time to create the snapshot in the new site was about 1/3rd the time for the same in the original site!

After working on the site the snapshot is still being created in around a third of the time. Nothing has been deleted but new files (stylesheet and images) have been added!

    Did some work
Some areas which seem to increase snapshot time are
    1. Including a marketing list on each page
    2. Including an advanced section list on each page which includes 'EntireSectionList'
    3. Having an extended information page for each product

      Hi Chris,

the only changes have been to the outer layout / CSS changes to the products etc... basically a change of theme albeit external.

      Marketing remains the same.
Section lists are the same (removed)
Products remained the same - no additions

Are you still using actinic.css or are you just using your old styles?

As you can tell, I'm reaching for answers here. If you have any more ideas of what might have caused the speed improvement, let me know.

its the generation of data and parsing blocks that causes slowdown, its a known issue.

can i ask if these things are cached? i mean, everytime a page requests the best sellers, is tha database re-queried? it seems logical to me, to cache text versions of parts of a template, so that no additional database access needs to take place. I tried to do something similar, with php includes, only to be foxed by actinics generation of a new dataset (or what seemed like a new dataset) every time a page was set to be generated.

I really do believe that if all elements were cached then significant increases in speed would be seen.

send over the source and i'll take a crack

Still the same external stylesheet with just different code in there.

Checking the ACD size they are almost identical - with difference being just the new image in the outer layout - only a few bytes difference.
