I have searched the forums but cannot see an answer to this. Should the sitemap referenced in robots.txt be the actinic-generated one sitemap.html or the xml version I FTP up? Does it matter?

It needs to be the XML sitemap that you reference, as the search engines require it in a very particular format (so far as I know). As long as it is created in this format you should be fine (I assume you are using some software to create it for you).Comment

Another question. I read somewhere that Google recommends a maximum of about 100 links per page in the sitemap. I currently have about 150 and growing. Should I consider splitting onto separate pages?Comment

If you like to follow Google recommends then yes, if not, then no. I have never personally, a well structured site shouldn't even need a sitemap IMO.Comment
