    H1 and section names

    Hi,

can someone help. I have a company trying to optomise my SEO etc.
They have come up with a list of changes that I need to implement but I seem to have a problem. They are talking to me in HTML terms eg

They want me to change the H1 to "large size tee shirts for big men" from Tee Shirts. In Actinic this seems to relate to "Section Name". So if I make the changes proposed the section name will be "large size tee shirts for big men" which is silly. I want to be able to change the H1 but leave the section as something descriptive eg T Shirts. Is this possible, am I missing something?

I then want to go on to amend the "Title" and "Description". Well thats seems fine, it relates directly to the "Section Page Title" and "Section Description" - correct?

Ok - but how do I do that for the Index page? Or for that matter the Catalogue start page (called Shop.html in my instance)? They don't seem to have the same Description and Title.

Maybe I'm being very dense but ny help would be gratefully recieved.

The homepage title & description comes from clicking on the top "house" icon in the content tree and look under the general and page settings tab.

Similar for the main shop page click on the green bunch of dollars icon (I think thats what it is supposed to represent).

The H1 tags makes sense but not in a real world. They want you to load the product name with a shed load of keywords at the expense of the customer. They are telling you to add this against the product title and not the section title. You will need to ensure that the product title is being wrapped between h1 tags ... and also that you do not have other h1 tags on the page. If you have multiple product pages then this could be an issue. I am not one for using h1 as the product title myself.

I would only support product names as H1 on SPPs

H1 would better be used for page descriptions, as jo said, if using spp's aswell, then this will work for the products on there own pages.

Amazing what potentially dangerous advice is still given.

              Oh Dear - H1

              Thanks for all the advice.

Jont - the H1 they are talking about is the section name. eg. I have a section name called "Tee Shirts" is this they want to replace with the text I mentioned in my first post. This (as far as I know) is the section name (NAME in the section / General tab). Does that make sense?

I have to say I'm confused as to what to do next. I did think of creating a new variable and replacing the SectionName with this new variable (Realsectionanme) that would leave the "Section Name" free to be used as they want me too. However I'm now concerned with comments like "they are missing something...".

Has no one else come across these issues? What was their solution?

TBH you shold really get yourself someone who is familiar with Actinic to help with SEO. They wil lbe able to advise exactly how to manipute actinic.

As you have found it isn't as easy as just wrapping H1 tags around certain keyphrases. If you do this willy nilly with section names, product names etc you are in danger of over compensating.

As a general rule, you need unique page titles for every page, and good body text - for body text read product descriptions. Once you have these 2 yo can then add in stuff like H1 tags, page names, image names etc etc

If the phrase "large size tee shirts for big men" fits into your product description it is right for your site for the human visitors who will buy from you. Personally if i were looking for such an item i'd be using a keyphrase such as "XXXL teeshirt". Having said that teeshirt, tshirt, t-shirt, tee-shirt is a highly competitive market - so Good Luck

The key to good SEO is the correct phrase for both spiders and humans.

I'd be searching on 'Weight Watchers', 'F-Plan', 'Atkins', 'Paul McKenna' etc. instead.

                    Ideas

                    Guy / gals,

what about this idea of creating a new Section Title variable ie. RealSectionName. I could then replace the H1 text with whatever i want. Is that viable? How could I get this new variable onto the section page so I could edit it on each different section?

                    May not be a goer

You can tell the variable to be displayed at the section level on any of the tabs ... you would insert in design tab mode at the correct place and start typing the name and the variable shold popup to be selected and inserted.

However. I do not see the use, sense or point of creating a variable for section names what can be done different to the existing and automated section name variable... the only thing it would achieve is creating more work for you.

If they are suggesting it is the section names that need loading like that I would consider using someone else. The theory is one thing but the real world usage by humans is another. You can certainly tweak the section names but don't over load them with keywords... humans have credit cards... search engine spiders do not.

                        Seems madness to me too.

you should be thinking about working these phrases into your product descriptions, then you might realise just how relevant they are.

or create abit of text at the bottom of each page utilising the SEO text - But only if you must ie a fragment
