Navigation Help - Registering Layout

I am trying to add product category links to the left part of my website. For example, I am selling Alltel Centennial, Helio, etc. Im trying to display the links on the left part of my website. I am using smart layout buttons and have entered [SideBar:Smart Left Sidebar] in the area I want them.

Any idea how I can add that to my layout?

I think you should be looking to insert the toplevelsectionlist, why are you using anything from the smart theme?
