    Flat File Import containing duplicates

We're adding a catalogue of products using Flat File import.
The products are various luggage accessories for motorcycles, listed by bike manufacturer and then bike model, then year etc.
Some of the products used apply to more than one bike model, therefore there are duplicates.

The first question - is it acceptable to have exact duplicates in a flat file import?

It has all been going fine (many thanks BTW to Leehack who egged me on to give it a go ) until we began adding duplicates.

Because we have been doing the work in chunks - by manufacturer in fact, this has only just come to light.
We load [section] Aprilia, then BMW - so far so good. Then, we load Honda which has some duplicates of products in Aprilia and find the Aprilia 'original' products have vanished while the duplicates appear in Honda perfectly well, although their correct order has altered during the import.

The site is in TEST mode and not yet uploaded. We always clear the whole lot before importing everything again, then adding the latest import batch.

Any ideas and advice hugely appreciated as usual.
    Kind Regards

    Hi,

Yes, you can put duplicate products in via an import but you have to do the following:

1 - the product reference for the duplicate should be in the format of x!yyy, where 'x' is the instance of the duplicate (ie the first duplicate will be '1', the 2nd will be '2' etc). 'yyy' is the orignal product reference. So the first duplicate of product '1234' will be 1!1234. You should also note that as references cannot be more than 20 characters long, original product references should not be more than 18 characters if using duplicates as you need the two extra characters in duplicate references.

2 - you will need a column for 'Original Product Reference' which needs to be mapped during the import

3 - you should have a column for 'Product Type', where '0' is a standard product and '1' is a duplicate.

    I hope this helps.
