New variable appearing twice on choices

I have set up a new custom variable and it can be seen in the choices of my drop down list. (place of setting:choice, group:choice, tab name:general).

This works fine for the existing choices in my drop down list. However when I add a new choice, actinic asks me to enter the new variable value twice (the variable textbox appears twice). So I have to enter my value twice.

Is there a way to fix this, so the variable only displays once?

This issue should be fixed in the latest version so I'd advise upgrading to v8.5.3.

      Hi Tracy

I have exactly the same problem using Normans Dynamic Choice add on which creates a custom variable for the image to use with a 'choice'. Problem exists in V8.5.3 and in V9.0.2

If you shutdown and restart actinic the double entry disappears, leaving just one. If you fill just one of the double entry it is deleted automatically, if you fill in both Actinic crashes and will not restart. I worked my way round this by having a backup of the access database and replacing the corrupted database.

I was working with a V8.5.3 site but also tried it on a V9.0.2 site that was created in V9 so the problem is definitely not solved.

The problem does not occur if I define the variable in Actinic by hand but does if I import a variable as part of a snapshot import (i.e using Normans add on). Could this be a problem that is in the snapshot and is then being imported as the snapshot is done in V8.5.1

I've also had this today on V9, so if it was fixed, it is back again and making a reappearance.

          Hi Malcolm,

I can't recreate this in v8.5.3 or v9.0.2. Are you able to recreate it on a site that doesn't use Norman's plug-in?

this happens to me occasionally, especially where I'm going through filling in a new variable on numerous products.
It doesn't seem to be a permanent thing, as Malcolm says, but it's happened to me a few times since being on 8.5.3.
Editted to say, this was just a normal text variable I was adding, nothing fancy and nothing to do with add ons.

I have been experimenting in V9.0.2 and I can create a new variable with the same settings as the one giving problems and it works fine. One thing I noticed was that the import is from V8.5.1 and I am wondering if the problem was in V8.5.1 and is coming in via the import, i.e I am importing a bug!!

I have emailed Norman to see if he can redo the snapshot in a later version of Actinic.

Following on from that can you explain what was causing the bug in the first place ( a full blown techie explanation please) and knowing the source of the problem is it likely it could be imported in a snapshot.

I have had a look in the actinic database and the two variables are not the same even though they appear to be from the design screens.

              from the database table variables

nBounded by is 1 for the imported variable and 0 for the created variable
              Does this help?

Thanks for this information Malcolm. I'll put it to the development team to see what they say about it.

                  Hi Malcolm,

Can we take a look at the snapshot for this to determine what's happening as we've been unable to recreate the problem? If it's less than 12 mb you can email it to me otherwise please upload it somewhere and send me a link to it.

Can you send me an email address so I can send you an example, Natalie Omany and Bruce Townsend both have my email.

I can regularly recreate this problem in V8.5.3 and V9.0.2 by importing the design snapshot that Norman sends out into any web site design. The snapshot was created in V8.5.1, my machines all run WinXp SP2 or 3, problem can be recreated on any Actinic installation on any of my machines.

I have just installed V8.5.1 on a clean laptop, installed Normans snapshot and it seemed to be Ok, I then upgraded to V8.5.3 and now the problem is there. Unfortunately I need V8.5.3 for this site as it uses Actinic payments.

To recap any existing choices on any product are fine, any new choices get the double variable, close Actinic and restart it and choices are fine.

Enter details into both choices without first shutting down crashes Actinic which will then not restart until faulty site is overwritten by a good one.

If anyone at Actinic want a copy of the add-on that's exposing this problem then just get in touch.

                        Hi,

I'm afraid that I have been unable to recreate this problem. I have imported the snapshot you sent me into 8.5.3 and didn't see any issues. So I then uninstalled 8.5.3 and installed 8.5.1 and applied Norman's plug-in (thank you for sending it through Norman). I then upgraded it to 8.5.3, first by installing 8.5.3 over the top of 8.5.1 and when that all worked ok, I then imported the snapshot I made from 8.5.1 into 8.5.3 and again it worked ok (I checked every choice in the site).

I've also tried upgrading your snapshot and mine to v9.0.2 and again no duplicated variables. I've also checked the database and the variables are not duplicated in it.

What happens if you create a site in 8.5.3 and then apply the plug-in?

That is odd as I get the problem with every site I try it on, including a new installation on a separate laptop. The problem occurs only in new choices and occurs after you enter the choice details and OK it, it is a single image entry box up to that point and a double entry box after. The snapshot I sent only exhibited the problem after it was upgraded from 8.5.1 to 8.5.3. I started out with a new installation of 8.5.1 on a clean laptop. I then installed Normans plugin and all seemed OK. I upgraded the site to V8.5.3 intending to get a design snapshot I could try and found that the site now had the same problem.

I will do some more testing and let you know the results.

                            Hi Tracey

I generated a new site in V8.5.3, added Normans plug in and then added a new attribute to an existing product. I then added a new choice (see picture 1) and when I entered the choice I get two image entry boxes (picture 2)

Ah, that's what I wasn't doing. I was just trying it out on existing choices. I can now recreate the problem. I happens on new 8.5.3 and 9.0.2 sites so it's nothing to do with upgrading. I'm taking a further look into it for you.
