1and1 / BT smtp settings problem

    Hi
I am having problems sending and receiving emails directly through out website. I can use outlook to send and receive fine.
I am on Actinic V8, 1and1.co.uk business package and BT provide my internet connection. Ms not Linux

I believe the smtp should be BT details and they have screen shared to check all details and confirmed it should work, they have also authorised my website to bt to send and receive emails (found reference to this on other postings) I have mail.btconnect.com as the smtp setting and username and password unchecked.
This is the message that these settings bring up 'The computer you specified as your mail server is not a valid mail (SMTP) server. Check the computer name or address and try again. If it fails again, then it is possible, you were locked out by a firewall program, or you don't have network connection to this server.'
    'Actinic Mail Test completed successfully
    server: passed
    connection: failed
    sockets: passed
    communications: failed
    authorisation: failed
    message: Connection refused'

I have read numerous other postings but cannot seem to sort this, as none are exactly the same - ie. linux or profession on 1and1 etc
    Can you help please

Use the 1 and 1 email settings instead, i have never heard of BT settings being used successfully and to look professional you should have an email address at your domain name. I think mail relay is the issue with BT, it's a PITA.

For note you need a static IP address from BT to allow relay through their servers.

Thanks Lee, but can I ask you what should the 1and1 smtp settings be as I did have these set originally (again screen shared with 1and1 as I couldn't get it to work) and the emails would not work then and it was 1and1 who suggested using the BT settings. And yes i agree it is much more professional to have the mails from the @wheelsonheels.co.uk email address and not from bt.
I did have everything set up and running great until a couple of months ago through Fasthosts, and then I started getting timeout problems, so i changed hosts after many weeks of chasing my tail to find out who was at fault.
        Thanks again in anticipation

Untick requires username and password and type in 'localhost' (without quotes) into the smtp field and see if that passes, that works on many hosting packages, including 1 and 1.

Failing that try the server SMTP address as auth.smtp.oneandone.co.uk

Fantastic!!!! At Last. Back to full working order.
Thanks again to Lee for the information, but this time D Roundings suggestion worked - auth.smtp.oneandone.co.uk - I have tried all sorts of versions of this and I think the confusion arises as it is a number and it is not clear whether to spell it out to type the number itself.
              Cheers
