Limit the Number of Line Items

We are having a problem with 60+ line items being processed in a single order and need to know whether it is possible to limit the number of items that can be put through at once and if it is, how this is done.

I'm aware that there are numerous postings advising that this is due to server execution and / or timing limits.

We were using SSL on a general purpose shared server that ran into problems at 20+ line items and so moved to a specialist provider (I don't want to say who this is here) two days ago who assured us that there would be no issues with the number of items to be processed.

I tested on the day the SSL was moved and found that with 60+ items the Internal Server Error occurred. The provider was told about this at the time. This afternoon a very unhappy customer has advised that a substantial order was lost today when approximately 75 items failed to process.

I've advised the service provider of this and am awaiting a response.

At the moment I just need to know how I could limit the number of line items so that carts can be limited to orders the SSL service is capable of processing.

Any suggestions on this would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Alan

    Hi Alan,

how I could limit the number of line items so that carts can be limited to orders the SSL service is capable of processing.
I've checked with our development team and I'm afraid that this would mean a huge change to the perl scripts so can't be done.

      Tracey,

Thanks a lot coming back on this - I'll cross that option off the list.

It does seem to be a loophole in that orders can be compiled on an open ended basis and that in that situation were the limit of the server is reached, there is no way to prevent an unprocessable order being submitted.

Instead of a polite message advising that the order should be submitted for processing or "Contact us for large orders", the customer simply ends up with "Internal Server Error" and no explanation on what to do next.
