The 'UPGRADE' from V7 to V8 was too painful to recall or ever go through again
As it was for many people - what is being forgotten by people is the advice we all gave for people moving from v7 to v8 and that was to redesign the site, as upgrading brought with it a whole host of problems. IME is has never been the best plan to "upgrade" from V7 to 8 or 9 but to import product data and redesign in 8/9. This may be where people are going wrong?

V9 was difficult to justify paying £1,000 for as an upgrade and that is really my only gripe at the moment
Agreed but for a few of my clients they will save a fortune using the MOTO - but they will not be getting it for a while yet.

We haven't ventured to use the MOTO yet, it is still quicker for us to process online - I'm not inclined to pay for Actinics PSP service either, we use Secure Hosting and am very happy with the price, security and reliability that they offer. We still have an PSP accounts with Protx and HSBC bank as fallbacks, but haven't used either for over two years. We fell out with Protx one November 18 months ago - another story!!!

          No problems so far

I have upgraded two sites from v7 to v9 and have had no problems so far. The upgrade which was just from a snapshot worked fine and overall Actinic is a good solid product. There is the pain of upgrading to new software releases and this is not limited to Actinic. I still won't allow Vista on our network, as we all understand XP and it does what we want. That said those two sites had minimal customisations. With our main site I will have to do a lot and am working through the long painful process of getting it how I want it. I still work in customvars for example and this Variable Library and block ifs are a nightmare, so I will be asking for help (thanks Jont already). But looking through the forum you can see statements from some of the major posters on this forum about how they changed from v7 to v8 and squeals of protest. Now those same people are fantastic at giving out great advice and even have businesses dependant upon it.

I have looked around at other packages and for the price, hassle and dare I say stableness of the product Actinic is a good option. Take some of the others, they use user built facilities that don't always get upgraded but which you come to rely on and then you have problems with hacking and security and god knows what. With regard to timing of upgrades well I think maybe you have to look wider. That old PCI DSS issue, seems to have prompted the release of v9 and the situation with Actinic Payments. That was a deadline forced on the ecommerce industry by the credit card companies. I for one am glad that Actinic are proactive enough to at least try and come up with a solution (ignoring all PROTX, SSL arguments etc that have already raged on the forum). The beauty of the Internet is that it suits individuals and we all have our own working practices and our own setups. With Actinic you get a product out of the box that works for very many people, and in my view you can see why with a major new release there will be problems which are not necessarily down to incompetence, laziness or crassness but sometimes just our own unique setups.

about how they changed from v7 to v8 and squeals of protest
If you are moving to V9 now you have missed the pain - since V8 was released almost 3 years ago now it has changed quite a bit. Our squeals of protest have helped produce the stable product you mention so you have gained from our pain.

V9 is still evolving and some big changes in the way actinic communicate with developers are happening next month which are another result our our squeals of protest. These I am sure will produce an even better product.

This is a very exciting time for everyone from out-of-the-box users right through to Actinic Towers ... everyone should see substantial benefits.
