Layout problem in different browsers

Hi

I've been sent a v9 site to sort out and it's got me stumped! The problem is that the layout is OK when viewed in IE and Opera but in Firefox or Safari the first bit of the page content is outside of the main layout. The site is on a test URL at http://act5.artinet.co.uk/

I was only sent a design snapshot so it's just the basic store - the original theme was Technical. There's something wrong in the CSS, but any ideas, anyone?

I would agree with Darren on this one, looking at the source of the page it does look like an unclosed / broken table that is causing the havoc.

Yep, that's always my first stop too, but all the <table>, <tr> and <td> tags pair up nicely with no closing tags missing. I'm guessing it's in the CSS somewhere but I'm blowed if I can find anything wrong

Why not just bin the design and start again - its not that far from default?

A rebuild is on the cards anyway (the site has other problems) but the aim was to just fix the layout for now... easier said than done

I've just had a look, not the easiest to decipher as its a mix of tables and css, there are some redundant and incomplete tags doing nothing in the head area, but i think the main problem seems to be that some of the header area is floating left so out of the natural flow and some is not, it looks like 2 areas side by side are being told to be 900px wide.

It looks resoundingly like actinic.css which frankly could be made 75% smaller and still do the same job. I'd agree that scrapping it is the best course of action, it's in a pretty bad state. I think you'd have to be seriously up for a challenge to try fix that.
