I have found the following in the knowledge database about SSL.

Can I put just the checkout and Login pages on a SSL server and the rest of the Catalogue on a standard server?

Yes, providing that both the SSL and Non-SSL cgi-bins reside on the same physical server as the acatalog folder and that a directory path can be specified to allow the scripts in the SSL cgi-bin to access the acatalog folder.

Select 'Settings | Business Settings | Payment and Security' and tick the box 'Checkout Pages and Customer Login only' in the SSL panel, to enable Split SSL.

However, the company i sue to host my sites is fasthosts.

Therer SSL servers are seperate from where my catalog resides.

Is there anyway I can SSL to work?

SSL will only work on fasthosts if you secure the entire site.

do a forum search to see this already discussed and possible solutions/alternatives

Forget it - some sites have achieved reasonable SERPs with ssl sites but by having the whole site ssl then you are blocking g from getting in to index it

not to mention performance issues with the site in general, speed can be affected adversely IMHO.Are you using a PSP or do you capture details for processing later.

If you are using a PSP, I would switch off the SSL as it would (in this instance of hosting supplier) be a risk to the site performance and as such deemed unusable?

How come actinc offer the SSL shared service where the catalog still resides on the merchants server but it won't work on a fasthosts server?

Fasthosts are pants with actinic, most problematic actinic host ever. Plus shared SSL is dead, read up on PCI DSS if you haven't heard about it, lots of info in the forum.

They dont - when using actinic ssl the shopper is transfered to the actinic server and leaves the merchants server.

As lee says you are out of date and ssl is dead in the water you now need a psp and actinic are changing thier ssl offering to a psp.

this is where the actinic info is still muddy. I've asked so many times in the forum how PPP with SSL on client website will be pci compliant - not had a reply yet.

I can't see how it will be.

For your information on my sites I use Worldpay to do my transactions.

However, I’m trying to use Paypal Merchant Pro and for users that don’t have a paypal account you need to pass the credit card details through your site. Hence the SSL enquiries.

haven't you got worldpay for that?

ie use WP for all cc processing and paypal for those who want to use a pp account. No need for SSL then

The reason for using Paypal pro was to reduce the amount of time it takes to setup a mechant account with e.g Worldpay. The amount of credit checks, the setup charges, transactions and refunds. The down side is you have to secure the payments for non paypal customers.

So, how do i get around the SSL issue
