Hosted by Actinic - shafted by 1and1

    Hi all,

This is my first ever post. I do apologise if this is in the wrong place but I have searched (many times) for an issue similar to this and have not found it. Lee - please don't shout at me, I'm already terrified of you! I'm a woman on the edge...please have pity!

I have hosting with Actinic and bought my Domain name from 1and1 (my first mistake, I hear you cry!) However, pointing it to Actinic was no problem.

The issue is that I want to use the email that comes with my Actinic Web Hosting, so I have to configure the existing MX records at 1and1. To cut a long (and very painful) story short - I get an error message at 1and1, telling me I need a 'glue domain'. From what I can gather, this is a subdomain, which should also be pointed to Actinic. The example at 1and1 says the subdomain should be ns.your-domain.com but I don't know whether I should set it up as ns.celtic-cross-stitch.com OR mail.celtic-cross-stitch.com (which is the MX record address supplied to me by Actinic).

    I'm sooo confused and exhausted!

Has anyone else come across this? When I spoke to someone at 1and1, they said I can't use their email anyway as I've pointed my domain away from them. So I'm stuck in no-man's land. Any/all help, suggestions, virtual tequila gratefully accepted.

    cheers,
    Mary

Why don't you just move the domain away from 1and1? We use freeola for all our domain purchases and you can deal with everything online. Nominet will allow the owner of a domain to change the registrar, I think it costs around £10 but again can be done on their site if 1and1 are being a pain.

I'd also move registrar, should just be a case of getting the IPS tag changed IME, at least that's how I do them and then just update the records myself.

          Glue Domain does the trick!

Thank you all for your suggestions. I think things are finally getting sorted out.

After many calls, I found someone at 1&1 who seemed to know his stuff. I had set up a sub-domain (the 'glue' domain) called mail.celtic-cross-stitch.com, given that the MX record of mail.celtic-cross-stitch.com (prio 10) and pointed it to Actinic. This seems to have done the trick. All my emails are now working, have been authenticated and are passing all tests on the Network.

And it only took three days of phone calls and quietly controlled panic...

          Thanks again everyone.

          best wishes
