Shopping cart not updating on catalogue pages

We have a three column layout where the shopping cart summary is shown in the RH column. However, when a product is added to the shopping cart it doesn't show in the summary on the catalogue pages. However, it does show correctly when one clicks on the button for 'Shopping Cart' and the shopping cart specific page is shown.

Common error often caused when jumping between www and non www urls.

A search using the following keywords should help

It does appear, as you say, to revolve around the jump from www to non-www pages.

However, although I've followed your advice in searching I can't find the answer. All threads I've found seem to be addressing a slightly different problem. Any additional suggestions gratefully received.

Use WWW version throughout your store, especially in your network settings.
