How to import Brand via flat import

I need to import product Brand via flat csv import file for use in the MoleEnd GoogleMash but I'm not sure how to do this as there is not a brand column in the flat import file example. I don't intend to display the brand data on the site at present, it's just for the GoogleMash.

I think that you can only import user defined variables through a hierarchiercal import.
