Is it ok to update to Java 6 or higher now?

Hi

In v8.5.1 there was a bug where you couldn't see the java checkout page 3 and I read on the forum that if you returned your Java to below version 6 and didn't update it would help - and it did (I think - cos there's still not a lot to see, but I got more than before).

I can't find the original post, but I'm now on v8.5.2 - does anyone know if it's safe to update Java now as I'm always getting update requests and ignoring them, but maybe that's not a good thing either?

its not a bug. The java checkout is a legacy thing for people who used it on very old sites. It should not be used now and many including me have asked for it to be removed from actinic as it causes pro lens for new users.

PCI compliance has now rendered it totally useless so it should be totally removed as a payment method option IMO

Being a novice you've got me worried now.

I haven't touched any payment methods or done anything to checkout except use whatever actinic gave me. I just couldn't view that page, so should I be doing something?

What's the difference between Java and javascript - if any? (Don't laugh it may be simple to you clever folk, but its all new to me). Cos theres a lot of javascript in the website that was already there.

What does the java programme do exactly on anything? Should I just uninstall it from my pc?

So many questions and no brekky yet!

After your breakfast spend some time Reading the forum about PCI compliance. The java script payment encryption method is totally useless now so you should be looking at getting a psp to take your payments eg paypal

You';re not using the java applet on your site so it's not relevant to you anyway - you are using Actinic shared SSL.

You should however look at doing away with that and getting a PSP to take payments directly rather than download the cc details.

The only thing I've ever used for payments is Paypal Web Pro is that not a PSP? I was told that I still needed to get ssl so I got the Actinic one.

Yes you are using PPP which is a PSP, however you are still using SSL to capture the details before sending them on to PP. Have a read on the forum and elsewhere about the implications of this.

The confusion here is about the java applet (which you are not using).

In Actinic (for legacy support from older versions) you can still select to use a secure java applet to capture credit card details and download them for offline processing. When the java update was applied that was mentioned some time back this meant that on your local PC you couldn't view the design page for the appelet - online use of it was unaffected.

Thanks for clearing that up. A simple question got a bit complicated there for a minute, but now as it turns out I shouldn't have Actinic ssl. I will read up on it as you suuggested. First I was told I didn't need ssl with PPP, then Actinic told me I did, but then they told me a lot of things that have turned out not be entirely correct!

You do need SSL for PPP. You just need to make sure that you understand about PCI compliance and what it may mean for you. I don't know how, or even if, it is an issue for PPP and Actinic SSL, but have a read and make sure.
