Error merging files - permission denied

    Hello,

After being unable to refresh our Actinic 8 web site, the ISP informed me that all was sorted out and that I try to connect with a new IP address.

Unfortunately I get the error message:

"An error occurred while merging files on the remote site. The web site index has been corrupted. Catalog is unable to update the index. Copy "./acatalog/fulltext.fil" to "./acatalog/oldtext.fil" failed. Permission denied."

I've raised a support call and informed them that this is probably due to a permissions issue on the folders/files since I can no longer add an item to the shopping cart from our web site.

When I do try to add an item I get the following message in the web browser:

    "A General Script Error Occurred
Error: Error opening ./acatalog/86Z130Z196Z217A1216398600B5508.session (Permission denied)
Press the Browser back button and try again or contact the site owner"

Is there anything else I can suggest to them to check or try? I keep getting messages asking me to try and update again but it still doesn't work. Furthermore, I don't actually know what they're trying to do!

Do a network test, see if that all passes, then refresh. If not, review all settings and permissions.
Once that's sorted and if the merge still fails, delete all files on the server via ftp client and upload again. Drastic, but removes corrupt files and prevents overwrite failures.
Oh, and do a snapshot before you start.

Thanks Guccij, the network test doesn't pass (permissions again) so I've pointed the ISP support to review these....as they should have already.

Frustrating, will see how it goes!

you need to ftp to your site, file zilla of something similar, and check / change the permissions of your cgi-bin, this should be 755

if you host has been making changes then this is likely to have effected the folder settings

Ta for that tip. I used CoreFTP on Friday to ftp to the site to take a look. Unfortunately I am unable to make any changes server side (security on the ISPs part I suppose).

Really annoying since we knew it was permissions related on Friday early afternoon. Now it's Monday and still no response from support.....

Just on the phone to Actinic as I write this....

Have actually deleted the server folders (acatalog & cgi-bin) and then uploaded the web site from scratch. Still no joy...

Oh, hello Pinbrook. I think they use Windows boxes...

Can you recommend a good hosting company with Actinic expertise?

I thought the permissions looked alright earlier on....will take a look.

Have just spent an hour this lunchtime on the phone to an analyst at Actinic Cover. Diagnosis is this: the new box on which our site resides is not (for whatever reason) allowing session files to be created. Am awaiting a further response from Actinic and have fingers crossed for a clever workaround...

hmmm sessions not being created, guess it would give the same error as not being able to read it if you cant create it then you cant read it makes sense

who is the host for this then?

i have to be honest if i was still trying to resolve this i would have moved host by now, would have been quicker

I wish! Problem is that I'm not around for a while after today or I'd have moved first thing this morning....!

Just to let everyone know in case you have a similar problem...

Our hosting company are adamant that there is nothing wrong from their perspective. It appears that the new box they have transferred our site to (thanks for not telling us by the way! ) is Windows based but, for whatever reason, does not allow Actinic scripts to work as they need to.

Actinic support have recommended a temp/emergency work around in that we go with them for hosting in the immediate future so as to see if they can get the shopping cart part of the site to work.

And, as I go off on holiday on Thursday, time is, shall we say, of the essence....
