Product limits ?

ive seen earlier threads with users having upwards of 50,000 products without any problems
does anyone no of a greater limit and the best way to achieve this safely
i have 1 product line which if i posted everything would number 180,000 products alone

when all the categories are completed the product varients are enormous

i know i could get round this partially by having the type and colour of door as attributes and choices but dont think it would work well for the customer

20,000 is the recommended limit.
