    /cgi-bin/index.html errors

    Hi guys

we are getting irregular errors in our stats for the page /cgi-bin/index.html
some days there are over 200 hits to this page listed in the Page Erros section of the stats, other days there are none, this can be over 1% of the hits to the site. The order levels fluctuate with it as well

Ive searched the forum and found many others with similar problems but none that seem to be intermittant like ours!

Any ideas what could be wrong anyone?

the host company, fast hosts say (as usual) that there is nothing wrong with the server but im not so sure, the fact that it doest happen every day would suggest that the code is ok right?

thanks for any hep you can give

    Barry
    Ps the site is www.tshirtsville.com

thats probably because this page does not normally exist, you probably have a link to it somewere or someone has linked to it

The link should be either yoursite/index.html or yoursite/acatalog/index.html, not cgi-bin/index.html that file should not exist in the cgi-bin.

Perhaps it was set when you were trying out your network settings, and has remained.

        Hi Darren

Im not so sure, if that was the case we would see those errors every day in the stats wouldnt we? at least a few every day, the site does up to 20,000 pages a day

ive searched and searched and tried everything to actaully go to that url but cant find anything

        what a pain!

i typed in yourdomain/cgi-bin and was forwarded to yourdomain/cgi-bin/index.html and then went into a loop.

You should ask FH what they have in place to stop people from viewing the cgi-bin as there appears to be something amiss.

All sites should have something at server level to prevent people viewing the contents of a folder, sometimes this is simply the presence of index.html so unwanted eyes see a blank html file rather than folder contents

Leave fasthosts and do your store a massive favour.

xenu couldn't find a link to /cgi-bin/index.html but did find a few broken links:

[Updated 01/08/2013] Links removed at owners request as google was indexing them and then reporting errors.
it's also reporting that a lot of your pages have the same anchor listed 5 times.

thanks for the tips everyone, It was a problem with the way error pages are set from within the fhosts cp panel, it was trying to load index.html from whatever folder the 404 error was in, i think!

now ive set it to mydomain.com/ instead it looks ok

thanks for checking that Mike and the xenu link! amazing there were so many broken links!

Lee have you got a suggested alternative to FH please as I know what you mean!

                Thanks all

                B

There are loads you can use, Pinbrook, 1 and 1, webfusion and tame the web to name a few, but it is so subjective as to who to use so i stay away from individual recommendations and instead choose to tell you who not to use, fasthosts being the very pinnacle of that list.

It's been discussed umpteen times on the forum, have a search see what the community has said in the past. The above recommendations cover a large part of the recommendations IIRC though.
