When you look at the cost of mega cheap hosting, savings must be weighed against actual or possible down time, which costs real money on any live site with real orders.

Really, I'm just agreeing with Lee.

Chris, why don't you stick your neck out and create a page on the actinic site where you list recommended hosts. Not everyone wants all their eggs in one basket so by listing the specialists that you know fit the bill (and reduce calls to support) we all win.

But I agree with Jo. A list on their website would have saved me hours today. At the end of the day, we still all weigh up the pros and cons of each hosting provider depending on our own needs. Sometimes Actinic will win, sometimes they won't. TBH I didn't even take account of the fact that Actinic provided hosting until today, when I looked, but a reputable list would mean that there are less people going with other (not so reputable) providers, that mess up Actinic and who then blame Actinic, giving the program a bad name.

Until recently there was one BUT there were problems when recommened hosts eg Netbenifit had hosting problems and it back fired on Actinic when people complained on the forum.

Now they only recommend Actinic hosting for obvious reasons but there is also the advantage that they support it so the us and them arguments will not exist.

There is also a thread on the forum where people were asked to suggest and rate hosts but Ive not seen anyone post on it recently. The problem with hosting is that someone somewhere will always have a problem with any host so you will always hear the bad side about it - others have the same hosting and it just works and they never think about it really.

To be honest actinic providing a list does not work, the current lists of developers is miles out of date and so will the list of hosting companies.

What makes a good developer, what makes a good host. They are all great when the site works but not when it's all gone tits up.

Recommendation is really the only answer, besides how would this list be made up, who decides what's good and what's not

                        See thread: http://community.actinic.com/newrepl...ote=1&p=245578

Why are FH being allowed to get away with this?
If it was my hosting I would be expecting a Joint Action against me!

You wouldn't go setup a business on the side of an active volcano, yet people willingly join fasthosts. We are literally talking 5 minutes reading to investigate recommended hosts. Fasthosts have never once been recommended as far as i know.

The thing that gets me is the vast difference in prices for basically the same service, by service I mean the supply not the support

Companies like fasthosts offer a dedicated server not managed for £49 per month with unlimited usage, whilst others charge up to £2000 for a simular service which probably has a limit on usage

Just where is the centre position, at one end there are problem now and again at the other end a very large profit for someone

If you use someone like rackspace then at least you are presumably using the direct link whilst others maybe either inbetween or just resellers

With most purchases of products you get close agreement on service and price, but for some reason ISP's seem to get away with prices based upon very vague perceived values
