    Neil,

    There are a few threads on here warning about the detrimental effects (affects? I never know which one to use) that an incorrectly configured Sitemap can have.

    If you search for Stinky ink and sitemaps you should find a lot of information. Having said that, I have used this:

        Hi WebD

        I've used that xml sitemap generator...can I reamove the lines at the top:

        HTML Code:
         <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
        - <urlset xmlns="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9 http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9/sitemap.xsd">
        - <!-- created with Free Online Sitemap Generator www.xml-sitemaps.com
          -->
        Also where does the sitemap go?

        Cheers

          If I remember correctly it should create a .xml file that you can open and edit in Notepad.

          www.yourdomain.co.uk/sitemap.xml

            What did you warn him about? you don't seem to know much about it at all, you don't even know where it goes.

              you can remove the line starting <!-- as it is a comment (ends with -->) but not the first two they are required. The file should be in the root folder(directory) of your site

                And Lee, incase you've forgotten this is a forum to help each other...not everyone is an 'expert' at everything as you appear to be, must be nice though.

                  I'm not an expert at everything, far from it, i'm totally useless at many things, many of which I am happy to come on here and ask people about. What I don't do is pretend to know things and then ask the most basic fundamental questions about those things.

                  I was intrigued on what you had advised, been as you know so little about it, but can see that my question didn't come over right, so I apologise.

                    I do not, have not and never will proclaim myself to be an expert in the filed of SEO (or anything else) which is why I come here for advice.

                    My advice to my client was based on the experiences of those who have been good enough post here with details of the negative effect the sitemap HAD on their businesses as his business is doing very well without one!

                    Explanation over

                    Cheers
