    Duplicate components?

I know how products can be duplicated, but is there a way to duplicate components?

the way i have my store set-up is to have a product, for example hard Drives and then list the different sizes and prices from Permutations, if create a duplicate product it will not allow me to separate the duplicate component from the duplicate product. This is not an issue now but in the future could make price changes very difficult.

    thanks

The way I read your post then you are trying to create a new product from a product duplicate which cannot be done. You can do it from a copy although it's better to create a new one IMO

I understand that, but i'm building a computer sales site and going to have a number of custom build systems. so for example i could use the same "Hard drive size" component for all the custom builds simply by copying it. the reason i wanted to create duplicate components, is because if wanted to change the price of a hard drive, i would be able to change the price on the "master" component and the duplicates would all update. currently i have to go through each custom build and make this change manually. maybe there's another workaround?

then you may need each hard drive size as a separate product - which it is in reality and then use companents which ate associated to it. Read the help files there is lots in there about this

I did think about doing it that way, but that would take a long time set-up each product and along time to set-up each custom build. The way i thought would be to create a hidden "master" list of products (hard drive) and components (size choice) then create a list (using word or something) saying which components are associated with each product. then when a price change is needed clear all the components associated with a custom build update my "master list" then re-associate the components with the custom build products, which is alot of work, but still a little bit less than the other method. hmmm

unless someone could think of a better workaround?
