TBH you are best using a designer who is faniliar with actinic from the start as you will have to pay twice - once for the design and then again to hae the design converted.

if I give my friend/designer a copy of a site i created in Actinic (using a template) do you think he'll be able to see which coding/scripts he'll need to keep and use? he's doing this for free for me so i want to life as easy as i can for him. using a stand-alone CMS he's never heard of is probably not the best start. but oh well,
thanks for all advice so far it is appreciated

You need to read the getting started guide about how to use dreamweaver with actinic. Its best to start from scratch with a simple dreamweaver page. Get the registration process working and get the site live so you can see what is ahppening. Then use the insert actinic content to add the bits you want like basket, navigation, search etc. Check it all works and then design from there.
The trick will be to get actinic doing its thing before you design so you know if you make any error that stops the site working - too often people dive in without getting the basics working - after that its easy to add any design you want.
If you are confident you can create a design or buy a template - register with deamweaver and then add the actinic bits.
Take sanpshots at every step so you can go back if you make a mistake and experiment first before posting on the forum
