    SMTP and third party issue

    Hi

We host our clients website and actinic store. They have their emails hosted by a third party supplier. We have just asked them for the SMTP details for actinic and have received the reply below. I am not sure how best to procede. I can set up a different SMTP email account on our hosting for a different domain. What do you think?

The external address of your server is mail.*******.co.uk. In order for the shop to send emails thru this address we need to know the IP address of the web server.

As mentioned; allowing the web site to send mail thru your server will open a gaping hole in your current network security. This will go against all best practices and will place your entire network at a greater degree of risk than we could advise.

It would be more normal for the site to send mail from an SMTP server owned by the hosting company or for the web site to use some form of programmatic SMTP engine such as CDO or ASP.Net – these send emails using their own resources and don’t require a separate email server.

Please see the following Actinic KB articles:

Note - the email links they sent were irrelevant to their point.

    Hi Zoe,

I think you have found the answers to your questions yourself from the knowledgebase. Actinic only supports SMTP provided by your hosting company. If you can't do this then you may need to use send mail.
