Coupon Codes not working - HELP

We are offering 2 discount levels until January 5th -- each offers a percentage off for purchases of a certain dollar amount. When I try to require the customer to use a coupon code, no where during check out does it ask them for the coupon code -- the only way I have been able to implement this is under discount and surcharges/order level where I dictate the amounts based on sale amount....and now they are across the board discounts to anyone who visits the site, where as I'd rather it be a coupon code based discount.....any suggestions? I keep beating my head on this and am coming up with no other solution.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

no where during check out does it ask them for the coupon code

By default it should appear under the 'invoice address' fields in checkout if you have the 'checkout' box ticked for 'Allow Coupon Code Entry in' in the 'Miscellaneous' tab on the 'Discounts & Surcharges Settings' window.
