Tax Man strikes again - Inclusive/Exlusive VAT prices

    Hey guys.

Just got news that we 'successfully passed' our recent VAT inspection (since when did inspections become tests?)

Anyway, this is what both our accountants and the tax man are wanting.

Under UK legislations as a retail store we must show prices inclusive of VAT on the product page. This is simple - Business Settings - Tax - select 'Inclusive of Tax'. Easy, fine.

However, what we need is to show prices Inclusive of tax on the product page, along with one of the following:
    • Prices shown Excluding vat in the checkout
    • Prices shown Including VAT in the checkout, but also stating how much VAT will be paid (eg. £100.00 - £17.50 of this is VAT)

Ideally, we would like to show a VAT breakdown on invoices, as our accountant doesn't like Invoices with no mention of tax, and believe it or not - neither does the tax man

This is either a really easy one that I'm too stupid and ill to think of the solution, or it's hard as nails.

    Any takers?

    Yours,
    Grant

Actinic should be doing this automatically in V9. If you enter prices including VAT then Actinic should show them including VAT on the receipt but also show the amount of VAT included as a seperate item.

      Thanks Mike.

If this is the case, then I hereby declare:

      Houston, we have a problem

I was looking for the thread that had the info on this from Chris D but I think it was in the V9 beta section that's now gone.

IIRC they were going to make this an option to suit the different needs of B2C and B2B users.

I'll see if I can find it.

Much obliged Mike. Surely this can't be another bug v9 has brought into our site...

              Rich,

We use Advanced Tax mode, Exclusive of VAT with the 'default' rate set at 17.5% - as we have factored VAT into our prices and our accountant currently does the necessary calculations manually - obviously this is very time consuming for every single sale, which is another reason we'd like to get this fixed.

Doing this, prices appear minus vat on the product page, and vat is added on at the checkout - which is horrible for a consumer to find the bill just jumped up 17.5%.

I have tried Inclusive of Tax but to no avail - prices appear including VAT on product pages, checkout and on the invoice, despite the vat rate still being set at 17.5%.

I could try 'Simple Tax', but one of our lines (gift vouchers) are VAT-exempt, falling under the 'Books and Tokens' Vat exemption guide, so this may cause VAT issues there - as I am under the influence that Simple Tax means I can no longer set VAT rates at product level.

Why didn't Gordon do me a favour and abolish Tax?

Im not disputing what you have been told as i am no expert, however we had to change our site many years ago for not displaying prices inc vat. Which is a requirement if your selling to the public.

But showing the vat excluded in checkout is all that is required from what i understand, providing you show a break down of the net price and the vat then the total.

As i said i may be wrong here but take a look are large companies, amazon b&q e.t.c i doubt they have got it wrong

We use simple tax and can change the products to exempt or zero tax at product details as we have some childrens overalls which are zero rated

You can show excluding as well as including vat on the same page as we do which should solve the problem, as far as I am aware there is nothing to stop you showing both

Product - Layout-Product-Price Layout-standard tax inclusive and exclusive

You can also do it to the whole site using site options

I can only assume it has something to do with the layout you have on the Cart and Checkout pages. Which Layouts are you using?

Thanks for the advice Chris - I've went into Business Settings and changed to every single variation I can possibly think of.

I can get product pages to show either including or excluding vat, but cannot for the life of me get VAT to be mentioned anywhere in the cart or on invoices (except for when using price excluding vat).

Could this be a coding issue? I doubt it as the coding behind our current template (Teclan's 'Cool Mint' theme) is rather robust - but on the odd chance, I'm hoping it's maybe just a blockif missing.

Out of interest. Anyone who shows prices including vat on the product page, but has their checkout/invoices splitting the vat - please can you let me know how your Tax settings are set up?

                          Cheers,
                          Grant

You are required to supply any customer with a VAT Invoice "on request", but it is not a requirement otherwise. After all, the receipt page on your website is simply an online equivalent of a till receipt, and very few of these show VAT breakdown.

                              This is from HMRC Website:
To whom a VAT invoice must be issued

If you are a seller registered for VAT you must give a buyer who is registered for VAT a VAT invoice for any standard-rated or reduced-rated items sold. If you are a retailer, you do not need to issue a VAT invoice or receipt unless asked to do so by the buyer. A VAT registered supplier may be fined if they do not issue a VAT invoice when asked to do so by a VAT registered buyer.
