Is there a way of having invisible searchable text, possibly in a custom field?

Balls... I hadn't even noticed that in my post. Well there's another lesson learnt.

I've no reason to use this, but I'm a nosy bugger and like learning new fings LOL.

Where is the information after the :: stored/kept, excuse my ignorance. If you look at the source code for the page it's not in there, as you already ,entioned, so how does the site search see/find it?

Does anyone know of any forum members who sells shelves or racking for invisible products? We want to hide some products from our customers in the shop. Thanks for any assistance.

Actinic indexes everything that's in the Description field but we chop some of it out before it's uploaded.

We had a competition to do this in the V5 era (when display:none wasn't invented) and I came up with (warning do not use nowadays):

                !!<>!!Mispelt Wurds Heyr!!<>!!

Not a good idea anymore as search engines would easily see this as hidden content and might penalise you.

My post #10 never lets these words escape to the web so they are only indexed by the Actinic search.

Just thought I'd say thank you very much. I know it was an odd request but your solution is perfect.

Edit: I have uploaded the changes and it's working great. I had a worry it might show if people did 'view page source' but it doesn't even show there.

I know I'm late to this discussion, but can't you define whether a variable is searchable or not?

In which case you could define a variable at the product level called 'searchterms', mark it as searchable and then enter the terms you want. I don't think it has to be displayed anywhere to be searchable.

I think that you cannot fill a variable like this with words and search for just one of them.

This kind of variable is intended for filtering the Advanced Search. You get a list of allowable words on the Advanced Search page and can choose one or several.

You might be right. It sems a strange thing to force it this way. I can only assume it was set up to meet someones particular need rather than general use.

Still, I can see a use for it, so I might use it sometime even if I do think it's odd.

May be worth mentioning that whatever you hide this way will show up in your googlebase feeds.

True if you're using the Google feed.

Luckily this is a tab separated text file that you could probably fix up in Excel. Although Actinic's way of appending the Choice lists to the Description might make things a bit trickier.

In this case we could stick another "::" after the hidden text making it easier to remove anything between the first :: and the second.
