How do I test cart and checkout

Whilst I wait for my SSL details I would like to test the site particularly the checking out bit. Can I do this locally or do I need to do it from my actual website and how do I do it whichever way it is?

Either upload it to where it will ultimately be operating from or to a test domain setup identically, if you don't then it's not really a full test.

Just spotted the option Web - Switch to Test Mode. Will this do the trick and if so presumably I need to run this and then Publish to the Web?

I would never use that as a final test for a site, i like to use things just as they will be ultimately, but i suspect it will show you most things if not all.
