Adding product ref number to options?

Is there any way to add a seperate ref number to an option in a product?

Once you've got this setup (associated products I mean) you can use the variable AssociatedProduct::ProductReference to insert associated product's reference into the design as your "separate ref number" if that's what you're trying to do.

although I was wondering if its possible to add a ref number for an item on options that is not in the product database.

we have alot of items and if we end up putting every screw or wall fixing on we would have well over the 10k product limit.

By "option" I assume you mean "Choice". Why not just put the reference number in the Choice name?
