    Duplicate Subsection

    Hi,

I have been looking at the structure of our website (v8.5.2) and am interested to know if the community think this is possible/a good idea...

In order to describe our layout (single product per page) I will use a product most people are familiar with, TVs.

We have a product within our catalog, an LG 12345, this could live within 2 sections of our website, Televisions and LG (one being the general category, one being a brands section). In order to accomplish this we duplicate the product but have to have 2 seperate subsections (each with a unique html name) within each of the previously mentioned sections.

Would I be correct in thinking that, in the virtual eye of a search engine, if someone searches for an LG 12345 that our website may be slightly confusing to it as it can see the same product details located on 2 seperate pages. Also, would the product be better 'qualified' if the same product (page) was linked to from both the Televisions and LG sections?

My question, is it possible to have the same subsection duplicated into multiple sections? Or am I incorrectly using the sections, subsections and products?

Thanks for any assistance/comments with this.

this problem exists for many people and there are various solutions. Duplicating pages and content is not good for SEO however i guessing the content of these pages will be quite different as one will have all LG's and the other a mixture of makes. Is so then duplicates is the easiest option.

I know there are other ways of doing this with various hacks e.t.c and im sure someone will be a long soon to explain, but its not something i have personally done any other way than duplicates

I agree with your concerns, not just from a duplicate point of view, but also the time it takes to set things up and the size the catalogue becomes. Setting up a duplicate section per product is a right time consuming PITA.

I prefer to get all duplicates linking back to the master SPP. I think this aids internal linking on the site and reduces any duplicate content woes, although with duplicates, Google just tends to drop one result, so not always a terrible thing. You need to know actinic pretty well to do it in the best way, creating a new product layout and using blockifs and variables, however there is an manual alternative solution, where you duplicate the product, show a taster of the product information and then use the 'link' tab on that product, to create a link which links it back to the original.

You can see an example of the best solution IMO on these 2 pages, where the top left product on both pages links to the same place:

      http://www.quantumelectronics.co.uk/...Acoustics.html
      and
      http://www.quantumelectronics.co.uk/...-speakers.html

It is also in place on this site - http://www.atlanticshopping.co.uk/ac...ols_Page1.html - where the page 1-6 lists and the colour selector options both have duplicates of the master product and link back to that master product.

          LOL you have firebug Taddy.

Guy had a lot of work done on the site over Christmas and the duplicate issue being solved was a biggie for him. His products can now easily be duplicated, which was one of the advantages a database site had over actinic I guess, but not anymore .

What's your favourite ever actinic store then, be good to see your overall winner or top 3. It could be a good new thread actually, it's easy to get blinkered into thinking you know what most people like to see. It could be very useful to know where you should ideally be headng with your site.

              Hi,

Thank you for your comments. Lee, the Quantum Electronics example is exactly what I was hoping to achieve. Is this technique something you can share or is it for internal use only!?

              Thanks.

Both sites have paid for this function to be added, so it wouldn't be fair to them, I also have a couple of other sites booked in to have it installed. At some stage I will though, it's just at the moment it is very new, I have worked for quite a while on it and it was only perfected a few weeks ago.

One of the main problems with it being that it is impossible to package up as an addon, because what you have to do depends on the site on which it is being installed. It will be impossible to ever sell off a shelf and it would take quite some time to explain in a forum. I will probably add it as a tutorial on my site at some stage, because long term, I think Actinic will address the issue anyway.

You can go the manual route though with what you have now, using the link tab on a product.

                  Hi Lee,

Thanks for that, I fully understand. I will look into the link option for now.
