Looks like you might be stuffed on this one, your thread from a couple of weeks ago - http://community.actinic.com/showthread.php?p=266501 - beared little answers, just workarounds or ideas.

As a minimum i'd be on the latest version of V8, 8.5 was not a good version from memory and that would at least eliminate anything in that area.

digging a bit, I think its a DOS related error where programs are only allowed to open a set number of files. I guess Actinic is over the limit sometimes - perhaps it fails to close files properly?

It can probably be changed in a config option (in the OS not Actinic) - some environment variable. Anyway, if it becomes a problem, I'll look into it some more. Only ever happened about four or five times, and I cant replicate except for the one issue where I inadvertently tried to load every image on the site from a remote URL......

Win XP has a bug that causes a memory leak (or similar) when copying a large number of files - perhaps this is in some way related. When you see the error you could try looking at the memory being used in the TaskManager. If you see that it is unusualy high then either reboot your PC or restart the windows explorer process. Restarting the process means that you can usually not loose any work in progress.
