Not updating and no error message

We're still using Actinic 7 and have just this week acquired a big problem. Upon pressing the blue button to update the site with new items etc. it checks the catalogue, html pages and the search indices successfully then the updating box disappears.
The guy who installed Actinic for us seems to have disappeared off the face of the planet and so we're a little bit stuck. Any ideas?

If something was working and then it stops working, it usually means something has changed; so that's the first thing to look for. Eg has your web host installed some update to the server or changed it's configuration, have you upgraded something locally or anything like that?
