    Permutations Confusions

    Hi All,

I'm building a site where the products have a number of attributes, two of which are width and height and both of which affect the price of the item.

I'd like some way of allowing the customer to select the appropriate dimensions with respect to each other, and to highlight the price for this choice, however with additional attributes, I don't want this selection to take them straight to the cart - I want a 'buy it now' button once they've chose all the options.

I'd hoped to use something along the lines of a grid, but the pushbutton grid doesn't really do what I wanted. I also can't get the permutations to show the the price because there are two of them.

I've mocked up what I imagine it would look/work like because I'm having trouble explaining myself:

I've searched in here and through the AUG, but to no avail. Sorry if I've missed anything pertinent.

Can this be done? What's the best place to start?

Norman at Drillpine (Drillpine.biz) has an add-on to give this sort of functionality, perhaps this is the best level of integration for this idea.

Can you advise which add-on this is?

I've looked through Norman's site but I don't see what I'd use. I thought NorMatrix might be a good place to start but it doesn't seem to cover what I need.

      Cheers.

Hmm, I thought NorMatrix would do this but obviously not. IIRC it was mentioned on the forum before and Norman's add-on was recommended.

Ironically I now would like this functionality too for selling a new range of products which the price is dependent on the height x length, exactly as your sample graphic shows.

Anyone got any other ideas? Perhaps Norman will have something up his sleave

He does it, just not advertised as specifically created for each occasion. Contact him via email, pretty sure he can help if you can pay.

well, necessity became the mother of invention and I've begun to approach this a different (probably inappropriate!) way while I awaited a response.

I'm making all of the permutation choices into individual products and I've created a table within a fragment that links to each of them. The customer can then choose the other attributes within the product page.

This has the advantage of allowing me to upload the 'permutations' using a flat file import, but I've got to hand code the table. Dreamweaver and excel have come in handy here so far.

Hopefully this will either a) be of some use to others, or b) give people the opportunity to show me how I'm going to fail before I do so

            Cheers,

I knew I had seen it mentioned before but couldn't find it anywhere! Excellent news - hopefully Norm has something suitable

              Cheers

Perhaps you just answered your own question there Ian, all of Norman's plugins I've seen being used and have used myself never present any issues - I'm yet to see one of the plugins break the software, but the software does break the plugin. Thankfully Bruce confirmed this is going to be fixed in 9.0.4

I don't understand what you mean there, Grant. Am I destined to fail? I've already invested half a day into this.

Norms stuff is always top notch and heavily tested - no point reinventing the wheel when Norman has already pulled his hair on your behalf.

Just to update you, I've been in contact with Norman today and am in discussion regarding his existing add-ons and/or the possibility to modify what's already there to suit. The product I intend to sell is exactly the same idea as your original sample graphic shows, so here's hoping it is a possibility. I suspect doing your own version will be very time consuming and as Jont said, reinventing the wheel.

                      Will update you soon, hopefully
