French language - Actinic site

I have been asked to build www.maisyshop.co.uk in French.

Has anyone else tried this?

The big issues is all the text which is automatically generated such as:

Adress, postcode, that product is out of stock, etc..

This can all be edited in the .mdb file, has anyone else tried this?

It sounds like a mamouth task IMO. Have you thought about the Google Translate Option?

I installed it for a client here:

From memory, you may be able to limit the number of languages available to just French, but it may be a short term fix.

How ever, there is a French Forum on the community, so I don't know whether speaking to Actinic may yield a better solution.

I am looking at this site from the UK, but where does Google Transalte appear? how does it work?

I think the big change to get Actinic to work in French is to change all the text in the catalog.mdb file. (obviously you could change it manually in Deisgn>Text, but the quickest way would be to upload a new file into the database with all the french words.)

I am really looking to see if anyone has already created a db of the french text that i could beg/borrow/buy to install on this new shop.

I have contacted the french site, and they have given me the name of the agency who did the creative, but I still have not discovered who built the Actinic site.

So if anyone has built an Actinic site in French - please don't be shy - make yourself known!

Here's an Actinic site that uses Yahoo Babelfish, which seems to work well:

The deeply impressive thing is that it seems to translate everything, even the text on (non-image) buttons. Perhaps this would avoid the need to build it in French in the first place.

You can probably tell better than me how good the French translation is.....

Here's an Actinic site that uses Yahoo Babelfish, which seems to work well.....

Except when you go through a cgi link - eg to the cart. Also after returning you're back in English.

I guess it depends on your reason for wanting the translation. If you just want to pick up odd sales from other countries then it may be OK - but if you're wanting to enter a French market then I think it must be completely in French.

Actinic used to have a french version - up to version 4 or 5 I believe, you should be able to translate everything that is used online and on the reports in design text.

Thanks for this. believe or not I asked uspport for info on french products and they said they aren't any.

But it seems there is a v9 actinic in which you can build french language sites with english software result!

Watch this space, I will post up the new french sites as and wehn they go live!
