    SMTP Configuration issue

I am having problems getting my Catalog (V9.0.3.0.0.0.IMMA) store to send emails, the store is http://www.cherylcolelingerie.co.uk.

I have configured the SMTP settings as recommended by my hosting company and I have also tested these with the same configuration in Outlook Express and I am able to send and receive emails though Outlook but cannot send an email through my stores Contact Us page.

My host is 1and1 and in the knowledge base there is an article relating to 1and1 however the suggested actions do not work.
"1and1 usually give the SMTP server as auth.smtp.1and1.co.uk, however, you should use auth.smtp.oneandone.co.uk (words instead of numbers). The 'username' and 'password' fields should be empty and the 'Username and Password Required' box unticked. Update your site after changing it.

If that doesn't work then try 'localhost' (without the apostrophes) as the 'SMTP Server' name."

The 1and1 SMTP host requires authentication and I have also tried the alternate port number, all to no avail.

From within the Actinic Catalog In Network Set Up, when I test I get the following:

The 'SMTP server' address entered in the 'Web | Network Setup' is incorrect, or not a valid SMTP server.
    Possible Solutions:
    1) Try "localhost" as the "SMTP Server"
    2) Check the "SMTP Server" host name, user name and password with your server host, then correct the details in 'Web | Network Setup'
    3) Check your firewall settings

I have tried localhost and confirmed the SMTP Server with 1and1, I have also turned off my firewall (back on now), all with the same issue.

The error.err file on the server has the following content:

Program = MailForm, Program version = 18819 , HTTP Server = Apache , Return code = 999 , Date and Time = 2009/04/24 16:57, Internal Errors = Unable to connect to the mail socket (Connection refused)

Any suggestions or advice greatly appreciated.

    Regards

    Paul

Do your network settings match those posted in this thread:

There have been a lot of 1and1 sites setup over the years and I've yet to see one where this doesn't work.

1and1 usually give the SMTP server as auth.smtp.1and1.co.uk, however, you should use auth.smtp.oneandone.co.uk (words instead of numbers). The 'username' and 'password' fields should be empty and the 'Username and Password Required' box unticked. Update your site after changing it.
Are you on a linux or windows server?

My advice would be to try the above again:

      - Put auth.smtp.oneandone.co.uk as the smtp server
      - Clear any entries in the username and password fields
      - untick the 'username and password required' box (it needs to be ticked to clear the entries)
      - Update the website
      - Run a network test

1and1 has got to be one of the easiest hosts to set up, just follow the advise given and use the example settings referred to.

Are you using an email address on the same domain ie someone at cherylcolelingerie.co.uk?

          Thank you

Thank you everyone for the advice.

I have been through all the settings again and using auth.smtp.oneandone.co.uk it works, exactly as described.

I am sure I did this yesterday but it was getting late so may have been finger trougle on my part. The only thing I know I have done different this time was to set the port back to 25 in the Actinic script.

          Yippee.

Just to close the thread and answer the question (it may help others):
          Q. "Are you using an email address on the same domain ie someone at cherylcolelingerie.co.uk?",
          Q. "Are you on a linux or windows server?"
          A. Linux

          Thanks everyone.

          Regards
