can not set up shared ssl certificate

    Hi
We've got Paypal Standard payment on the website. When customers choose Paypal, go to a https Paypal site which I assume is very secure.

But I would like to set up a Shared SSL certificate for shopping basket pages, checkout pages and login pages. Our host provider is clara.net. I have phoned Actinic support team. They told me that a shared ssl certificate could not be used on all checkout pages and login pages. it's only working with the creadit card details so that I need to do is that in Actinic V9 " Business settings -- Payment and Security -- Selected Method's Properties -- Configure method -- tick 'shared ssl' -- Provider: unlisted provider.....

Actually I might be a bit silly and don't understand what they mean. I thought shared one could be used for the whole website as well, just probably work very slowly. But they told me if I want to use ssl for all checkout and login pages, I need to move to dedicated server with a dedicated IP address and then set up our own ssl certificate.

I would appreciate it if anyone could explain it to me. Has anyone used shared hosting and shared ssl on Actinic website? Can you share any experiences?

    Many thanks

Actinic are correct to say that shared SSL will not work in the way you describe.

If i were you I'd ditch the whole idea of shared SSL.

I need to move to dedicated server with a dedicated IP address and then set up our own ssl certificate.
There is no reason why you cant get a dedicated SSL cert on shared hosting. I dont know if Clara will let you do this, bit other shared hosts will. (We do it, so do 1&1 - another popular host compatible with Actinic)

I thought shared one could be used for the whole website as well, just probably work very slowly.
not a good idea, rubbish for SEO, slow site = slow sales.

I have and do use it, actually its a bit of a trial i am running on this site http://www.rawair.co.uk

i only use the shared ssl for the checkout pages, i have not tried for customer logins.

To use this you simply tick the box under the business settings | payment and security. i Have checkout pages and customer login ticked not the whole site.

To use this get the sharedssl settings from your host and then configure the ssl part of your network settings.

As for Actinic telling you it cant be used with checkout pages i am confused as this is exactly what i do and it was intended for? Please dont tell me you want to collect credit card information this way though.

My test is just to see if the ssl adds some confidence to shoppers. To date i have seen a small increase in sales using this but the increase is not enough for me to say the ssl is what did it, there are to many other factors.

        Hi Grumpy

Thank you very much for your sharing. Now trying to do what you have done. Just found some information from control panel of Clara.net account. It asks me to create a .htaccess file. I don't understand it at all.

        I pasted them there"

        Htaccess files

To restrict access to a directory on your site, you need to create a .htaccess file. Within the file you will need something like the following:

        AuthTyoe Basic
AythName " Enter your user and password"
        AuthTextUserFile security/crypt/filename
AuthTextCrypt Off(or ON if using encryptd passwords)
        require valid-user

The AuthTextUserFile is created by the 'adminpass' utility, and contains a list of usernames and passwords......."

Did you create it for the setting? If so, is that possible to show me an example? I have no clue at all. Thank you in advance.

          Hi

I can not offer you any advice on how clara setup there ssl. My hosting uses a standard SSL cert that is on its own ip, this is then shared at server level so all my clients can use the shared ssl if they wish to. Some do and some dont

I configure my ssl through my servers control panel, setting up ssl are not really undertaken by people who do not understand servers or have access to the root. I have a number of ssl's for this server sitting on different ip's due to customer requirements.

You need to talk to clara, do you know if clara even offer a shared ssl? if they do ask them for the settings, if it is shared then you dont need to be messing with htaccess files.

im sure clara could allocate your own ip and install a ssl cert for you, i doubt it would cost more than £200
