Discounts for products within a section

Is there a way of setting a discount for all products within a section, without assigning a group to each individual product ?

Yes, in Actinic Business - it gives you the option when you are adding products to the group - you just select the entire section in the drop down list. Perhaps you're using Catalog as it does not have this feature built in.
