Using ProductID as a search variable

I have a site that needs to be able to search by ProductID as they assign individual ones to match their own product codes. Is there anyway that this can be used as a search variable ? One option potentially would be to make a custom variable that was populated with it's own ID and then to make that variable searchable.
Has anyone done this or found another way to do it ?

yes, that would be the way to go IMHO. I suggest you take a look at the online help for "Adding A New Variable" and "Variable Configuration" if you need help/information in setting this up.

After much faffing around, I found a checkbox under business settings | options which is ticked by default that stops the product reference being indexed. Unchecking it sorted it out.
