Changing Search Result Links?

I've looked around for ages for a solution to this but no dice, so if anyone can help at all I'd really appreciate it.
My problem is that a search result usually links to the section page that the product is listed on and highlights the search word.
For our site we wish to have search results link directly to the extended information page of a product. Is this at all possible?

I concede that I am stupid and didn't dream up searching IN categories as there are two different go buttons that work independantly, and looking through the few category items doesnt bring it up. *facepalm*
