    Error

    Hi,
I have just tried the import and am getting an error saying there is an error in line one which I have written as per Duncans example i.e. Header:Product
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

You have probably tried to use the wrong import format (ie: when importing you chose flat file rather than hierarchical). If that is not the case then you have got a problem in your header line for the file.

Also, I'm pretty sure that you can import custom variables using a flat file import, you have to create the variable in Actinic first and then it appears at the end of the list of fields to map to on import (you might need to restart Actinic after creating the variable, not sure).

        Hi Jan,
        Thanks for replying.
I am using the hierachical import so the issue must be in the Header but can work out why as I have written as said.
Just restarted Actinic and tried importing as flat but it doesn't have the RRP variable I created so this is a no go.
Maybe it is a V8 thing.
So back to the drawing board I think unless anybody can think why the Header:Product isn't working.
        Thanks.

Sorry Kessock, I didn't see that you were using V8, it's not available there.

Post the top few lines of your Import file so we can see what you've got.

If V8 is the same as V9, I think this only applies to dynamic external linking, not flat file importing.

Mark, are you using Excel 2007 to create the CSV file? If so, use Excel 2003 or similar if you have access to it, this solved a similar problem for us.

Why have you got a column called 'section text' for a product?
where did you get the 'Header:Product' line from?

The spreadhseet works as I want at present I am trying to add RRP (column H) and Column A is as Duncans suggested unless I am interpreting this wrongly.
Please see Duncans attachment for details.
                      Thanks.

The confusion is that the header for the product can only contain fields for products. Any fields for sections would need the section header row as well. Try deleting this column and see if the h import works then.

I know you are trying to use just one workbook for everything, and you can but one step at a time.

                          Just to be clear.
I need to delete my sections row?
If I do this how will actinic know which section to put the products in?
Sorry to be a pain but as you can see I am only able to funble my way through this.
                          Cheers.

This is how a hierarchical import works

                            Header:Product.....
                            Header:Section.....

                            Section....
                            Product....
                            Product....
                            Product.....
                            end
                            Section
                            Product....
                            Product....
                            Product....
                            end

Using this layout will provide actinic with all the information it needs to compile your store correctly based on the information you give it.

What i sometimes do is create a dump section, and put all the products in there and when imported drag and drop the products from the dump section to the sections you want.

There are example files with in the actinic directory (sites folder) to see what is needed for a hierarchical import. It's within the common folder.

Another option is to export your site and have a look at what is produced. You should be able to edit that and reimport it.

Once mastered, it can save you a load of time.

If the products already exist in the catalog you don't need to tell actinic which section to put them in. You can simply update the existing product information.

You can therefore import a very minimal hierarchical import which isn't actually hierarchical - i.e. it doesn't contain anything other than products.

The example sheet you posted looks fine except for the column with the heading 'section text'. You don't need to include this if the products are already in the right section. If you're just adding RRPs to all your products you can just use 3 columns - from your image just use columns A, B and H (Product, Code and RRP) - this will then just update the products with RRP values and nothing else.
