Looking at the product reference field, it appears one can add a number to the style, but how would it be able to associate the style with a color, and then the size. I have general style numbers, and each style has 2 attributes (size and color) and within each attribute there are a number of choices. Each style/size/color will have it's own UPC code, we want to determine if style XXX in color NNN in size 10 is in or out of stock. Is this possible, and if your suggestion can do this, please direct me where to find this field?

You'd need to create a product for each combination of a product and add the prod ref to that product yourself. When stock control is needed on things such as clothes, the only way it can be done is to create a product for each combination and associate that to the attribute list via permutations.
You will need to merge colour and size options into one list to make this feasible.

I would be tempted to add UPC (EAN in Europe) codes as a custom variable rather than a product code. Firstly they are difficult for a customer to read over the phone (a jumble of 13 numbers) and also, you could then use product codes which give you a good idea of what the product is when the code is read to you, eg:
ABC-skblu13
ABC could be the code for the manufacturer, sk is a skirt, blu is the colour, 13 is the size etc etc.
After a bit of practice you could even give customers and colleagues the product reference for an item off the top of your head, which you would never be able to do with a UPC/EAN code.
