    Rebuild site with v9 templates

I have just got a site snapshot back from our web developers, who have been bringing the site from v7 to v9. The email says to 'rebuild the site with the correct v9 templates' to make v9 run smoothly. She has left no instructions as to how to do this...and I do not think she is in work today, when I need to do the website work! Can anyone help?!

The website preview currently shows the site using some default template, not our custom template...

    Thanks

Did they provide it back to you in a snapshot for V9?

If so, then would have assumed that it was integrated for V9, but the note you mention seems to suggest you have to apply it to work in V9 - not quite sure what you need to do (apart from integrate into v9 yourself), unless they have sent you the wrong snapshot and wrong wording in the email.

Would get back onto them and ask for clarification (when they are back). Did they ever demonstrate the design port online for you, to see it live under v9 whilst it was being developed/ported?

I don't know what you arranged with your developer but I would've expected her to have sent you a working version 9 snapshot.

v7 and v9 are completely different in the way a custom design is developed and applied.

      What have you received?

Simplistically it should be a case of installing v9 and importing the snapshot. But first phone and find out if your designer is in the office today, if she hasn't sent instructions you need to ask for her assistance

Well I decided to email...and got a response...

"Basically all we have done (as per our contract) is upgrade from v7 to v9 but you are still using old templates.
It would be advisable at some stage to have the website redone correctly in v9 (basically it means starting from scratch in v9).
You will not see the template in v9 because you website was orignially built in v7but when you upload it all should look fine."

So there we are...but I am still non-the-wiser really! They could have told us that the website needs redoing correctly (an upgrade does kind of suggest that), then again its taken them 3 months to do this much...

Can anyone explain how the website will 'look fine' when I upload it, if the templates are not in the snapshot??

Experience has shown that the best way to move from 7 to 9 is to upgrade the database via the upgrade procedure and then create a new design from scratch.

At a guess, it seems the people you have used have done the database bit for you and possibly done the best they can adapting the v7 template to get something working in v9.

i would phone them up and talk it through with them as anything anyone says here is purely speculation.

v9 design layouts are held in the database.

Your best bet is to take the upgrade import the snapshot and upload to a test area, look at the contract you signed and decide for yourself where you are. Preferably use a separate PC and different network settings - do not do anything that will impact on your live v7 site....

it sounds to me as though they have sent you a v9 snapshot and all the layouts are using Act_prouduct_upgraded or similar and what they are suggesting is you have the site reworked using new layouts.

as jo said this is only guess work, i personally would have taken a v7 snapshot and imported it into v9 to see what happened, some sites go well others dont. You might need to change the home page layout as this one always gets screwed in v9 for me.

Well I still haven't figured out how it's working exactly...but uploading to their test server makes everything come together, even though Actinic's preview of the site suggests otherwise! So guess I'll just have to go with it, accept it as magic or something...

Perhaps you need to copy some of the images and css to the PreviewHTML and DesignPreviewHTML folders.

If you have some images in the additional files list then copy those from the Site1 folder into the two abovementioned folders and see if it fixes your preview.

A bit strange if it does not show in any preview (within application) or page preview within the browser, but then looks ok online. Possibly it is not showing correctly as the preview folder does not have the required files.

Can you post the URL of the demo v9 location?
