    Moving Hostiing from Fasthosts

    Hi All,
based on the advise of this forum, I've been on the phone to the muppets from Fasthosts all morning. The long and the short of it, is that I think I need to move my hosting away from Fasthosts.
One guy told me Fasthosts don't support third party software. Another said they did.
I don't need this kind of hassle when my site goes live.

Can anyone recommend a decent hostiing company that supports Actinic, I'm start-up so I need one that reasonably priced.
    Cheers

There are a lot of them.

If you're using a .co.uk domain then I woudl recommend 1&1. Their Unix Business hosting supports perl and has everything you're likely to need for £8.99/month.

There are quite a few of us on the forum that use 1&1 so you're unlikely to run into any problems we can't solve.

There are a few other hosts that others use and will probably recommend as well.

Have to say i had a really poor service from Fasthosts recently and no help on one or more questions, decided not to risk such an important site where support is crap, stumped up and went with Actinic as i thought Actinic hosted by Actinic should give me the best support along with this forum, i am not disappointed. Just to say since being on here a while i see there are a few others who specalise with Actinic and they would make good sense too.

Forum regular 'Darren B' also offers low cost Actinic hosting with prices starting at £30 per year - http://www.tametheweb.co.uk/.

I have not used it myself so can not comment on its service or speed.
Pinbrook is also another forum regular that offers hosting packages.

We have one site with 1and1, which on the whole has been fine and certainly for an Actinic site, it all works.

But for our new site, we've gone for Pinbrook (sorry Darren) because (like Darren's), the servers are UK based and for a new co.uk domain this seemed most sensible. 1and1's servers are in Germany.

              Thanks everyone.
I think I'm goping to go with with 1&1, slightly cheaper than Actinic and if other members of this commuity are using without issue than I'm sure It should be fine.
On that note does anyone have the Network settings for 1&1.

              Thanks for all the advice

You should know that 1&1 own Fasthosts.

I would recommend that you use an Actinic specialist, whichever one that is. It can be fine with a general host, but if something goes wrong, they often can't or won't help. In the meantime, you're losing time and money.

Also, Actinic runs faster on specialist Actinic sites as various non-standard plugs in have normally been added to the server that Actinic will use when they are present.

We use a small low cost host called 'Clook Internet' which we have been very happy with, they are not an Actinic specialist but were happy to add all the Actinic recommended modules and cost £5 per month (cheaper than Pinbrook but not as cheap as Darren's £30 basic package.

just to add my tuppence worth to the mix....

I haven't used 1&1 for a couple of years now but the reason I stopped using them was the quality of the support.

Clook servers are very good and the support is also good but aren't they based in the US? They certainly were but not sure if they have UK based servers now.

I would recommend going with an Actinic specific host (us included in that list but not mentioned yet....). It can save many frustrating hours!

Using these settings you need to setup the domain on the control panel to use folder /domain if you set it to use / then the PATHTOCGIBIN should be /cgi-bin
