You don't have permission to access...

Last night I deleted a load of products that are no longer available and added some new ones via an import spreadsheet as I usually do.

Looking at the site I am getting the error 'You don't have permission to access /acatalog/Jewellery_Trois_Amoure_White_Gold_Diamond_Bracelet_571.html ' when I click on one of the new products from its section page.
The Images for all the new products don't show either even though they all display fine within the Actinic 9.05 preview.

So far I have tried compacting the database then refreshing the website and I have checked the permissions on the acatalog folder are set to 777.

The errors are all through the site - here is a typical example

Any ideas where I should start looking?

The first thing I'd check is the permissions on the problem pages to make sure they're viewable.

I wonder if some hosts have a tightened some security settings somewhere. There are similar problems with another site where the images and pages aren't showing.

try changing the permissions on the relevant images to 755 (if they aren't that already). If that fixes them then the question becomes why Actinic isn't able to set the them correctly.

My best guess at the moment would be that the host is changing the permissions or owner settings for the cgi-bin.

You are spot on thanks Mike.

If I FTP into the site and set the permissions to 755 on the images and html files then they show correctly in the browser. It looks like everything that Actinic has uploaded has the permissions set to 640.

Next question - anyone know what would cause this before I contact support?

It's more likely to be your host changing the permissions.

Do you mean they could have changed a setting somewhere that alters the permissions on new files? If this was the case I would have thought doing the website refresh would cause all the files to have the wrong permissions.

I have manually set the permissions on all the affected files via FTP which seems to have got the site back up and working again. Luckily it is not a site that I change a lot as we don't use stock control.

My feelings are that it is something Actinic related at site level as our other sites are all working correctly and are hosted by the same company.

You are correct in thinking a refresh would reset permissions - but your host still has the ability to override them. Personally i'd check with the host first, its easy to eliminate this before looking at actinic

              Thanks for the input Jo.

Could you help me in how to phrase the question to our hosts as I am sure you get idiots like me asking things like this all the time ;-)

Do I ask 'Did someone dip into our website last night around 3AM and change the permissions on the files they saw me uploading' or should I be asking a more technical question?

I'd explain the problem to them and see what they say. i.e. "Actinic is uploading files and the permissions should be set to 755 but for some reason recent files are stuck at 644" (or whatever).

They should be able to check their ftp logs and see what's happening.

This is more likely to be a problem with the Actinic scripts being denied control over the files rather than someone manually changing things.
