I think I just broke my Actinic...

    Hi all,

wondering if anyone else has come across this..

spent the whole day working on the site (almost finished) was about to exit and do a snapshot .. but noticed that my £ symbol wasn't working so I changed the encoding to HTML (on the price inclusive variable) .. and it hung. Just the hour glass rotating.

I clicked on it and I got a 'Not respoding' error, and Actinic shut down.

Now whenever I try and start it .. it just sits there with the hourglass rotating. It doesn't even load the site just a blank screen with the menu at the top.

I can't even load a previous snaphot( although I made so many changes yesterday .. I'm not sure I want to do that)

Help, is there anything I can do?

I'm guessing it's to do with changing the encoding of the variable.. is there anyway to find the file with the error in the site folder and manually change it back.

    thanks in advance.

I think an uninstall, reinstall and import snapshot is probably your quickest method. It's an important lesson to learn that taking a snapshot before you do anything, particularly things you're not sure about, really is important. If you have access you can go direct into the database in your site1 folder but it's not for the faint hearted.

Can you get into the design library within the software or is the hour glass stopping all actions?

      Thanks for your reply...

The hour glass is stopping everything

I think you're buggered then to be honest, only working direct in the database or a reinstall will work as you can't take a snapshot to send to support.

          well lesson learned indeed

Before I do an re-install, I've just found this method on the board which does allow me to open my other sites ... "Run:\Program Files|Actinic V9|Catalogue.exe" /s site 1" , if I do this Actinic runs ok but the moment I select the site that I buggered up, it crashes.

I think I'm resigned to having to go back to my last snapshot.
However knowing that Actinic is working (it's just THAT site) is there anyway I can import the snapshot without having to re-install?
Will I need to create a new site and import the snapshot into that?

          thnaks for your help

Yes that woudl work if you have others registered too, license a new site, import snapshot, then delete old one.

You could also fix the offending layout by looking in the ActinicCatalog.mdb database with Access.

It's table DesignObjects and search the sDescription or sMarkupCode for the layout you munged. Fix it in sMarkupCode and you should be OK.

If you're not sure how to fix the code, then just copy / paste it in from a working database.

Thanks all for your help and suggestions.

In the end I took the easier option and just imported the snapshot into a new site.

It occured to me that most of the changes I had made has been CSS ones and could get those from the stylesheet in the original site's folder .. so all is back to how it should be.

But I have learned a lesson.
