Upgrading Multi User

Yesterday I upgraded the master computer from 9.0.3 to 9.0.5 and all seemed OK (well had to delete the old v9 and install the new version, but hey thats life with actinic)

I then upgraded one of the other computers, and when installed went back to the master computer (the one holding the databases) and found that as I opened each database it automatically tried to upgrade each database.

My question is I need to do the rest of the computers today (5) and have 8 sites. What is the best routine to do this as if every computer upgrade makes the master do this upgrade of database each time I will be there for hours

My thoughts just upgrade all the rest of the computers with the master left alone and see what happens or even switch off the master upgrade them all then switch on the master and hopefully see it just try and upgrade the databases once for each database

any answers before about midday would be apreciated

What a way to see out the old year
Went into the office to sort out upgrade and vat turned on main computer to get the kiss of death blue screen

Now in hands of computer shop buff,

I can if required put the master sites on the server, but reluctant as it's on 24/7 and I felt happier with the sites being on the master computer which is turned off each night

Oh how I would pay for a local actinic multi user expert to live within a few hours drive, who could take over these chores, and let me just run the company

Best good news we had a substancial order from Buckingham Palace last week and business is up about 25-30% on 2008

Bad news Chris re the dea computer, very bad timing on it's part.

With regard to your original question, you need to make sure that all of your computers have the same Actinic version running on them but you can upgrade each site as you use it - I personally would upgrade them all ASAP just to avoid annoying delays later but there is no need to do that.

Well it looks like Sat before I get the computer back so some will dip in on vat for a couple of days

The ugrade problem is that you upload the master computer and when it finished uploading the new 9.0.5 and re-starts it then updates the databases on that computer as you open them.

Whan you than update the first slave computer it it also goes through the process of updating all sites and hence when you check on the master computer it tries to update the same dtabases again each time yo open them for the first time

For the second slave it will be the same so for 5 computers and one Master and 8 sites the database will be updated by the master and then each individual slave system

I have a feeling this has always been the case, but with only a couple of computers and a few sites this was not a problem,but now seems a time consuming option and is the reason I never changed to 9.0.4

Hi Chris,
Sorry to hear of the PC troubles - we have upgraded the multi user several times and we had to do it in a sequence, one at a time or every time you turn one on it attempts upgrades.

We spoke to Actinic and when we told them we had Actinic installed on the server and PC's they suggested we simply have the sites folders on the server which speeds everything up, something we will do soon.

It looks like I have to get things sorted today and tommorow, what was the sequence you ended up with for upgrading?

Anyone have any thoughts on what if any is safest or more sensible regarding operations as well as hacking the server which is normally on 24/7

1 to have the whole site on the server with its databases

2 to have just the databases on the server

3 stay as I am with it on a seperate computer switched off at night but networking slower than having it on the server
