Adding product - product image

This may be a daft question, but when adding a product I have 3 product images on the product details form.

1 - product image
2 - thumb image
3 - extended details image (on the extended information page).

1 is used in the product listing
3 is used on the product pop up

Where is 2 used?

You can choose to use it anywhere, a fave of mine is to override the marketing list browser resized ones. But the two predominant uses for them is the search results and in the cart i think.
