it is one of many factors used to gauge a site's popularity and authority, so yes you need to build backlinks from similar popular and authoritive sites

dont know. In these days were Google has the monopoly on searches i tend to use all the tools Google provides to optimise and analyse sites

When i put the href code in a fragment it just appears as i have written it.

Reciprocal linking is pretty much dead in the water, abused by too many like so many things. One way inward links are your aim, perseverance, patience and most importantly having a half decent site and service on the end of them are key for those.

Paid for and reciprocal links do more harm than good nowadays IMO.

Inbound links account for 70% of relevance when Google calculates SERPS. The best links are from what Google classes as highly trusted sites e.g. professional bodies; trade organisations; certain paid-for directories etc. Inbound links are considered to be an independent vote for the usefulness and relevance of your page/site.

You also need to build up links from forums (links in signatures); by writing authorative articles with links; blogs; social media profiles etc

That's the good news.

The bad news is inbound links are time consuming and difficult to achieve.

There is plenty of advice on the web on how to do it.
