Option for digital download +or- shipped CD

Hi all,
I'm sure I'm missing something very obvious here and I hope I can explain the problem clearly.
I'm trying to add single recording products that are available as two options:- a digital download or a shipped CD, - but I want people to be able to order both (though this is probably unlikely for most customers, - ? perhaps a download for themselves immediately and a CD as a present).
I found an earlier post (CD + Download) which enabled me to get as far as having the CD and the download as hidden products which are then associated with the choices, and this works, except that you can't order both options.
The problem is that once a digital download option is added (it seems to be anywhere within the main product), the maximum number for all options in that product automatically become one and can't be changed as the option in product 'details' is locked (grey). This prevents people using the dropdown again to add a CD if they've already added the download.
I've also tried just having two products CD and download separately, but this looks a tad scruffy and I'd rather have a dropdown list or similar.
Any help greatly appreciated, I have a suspicion it's not possible!

Why not have 2 products per page with a "Single Add To Cart" shopping mode.

The first, the DD one, with the image, description and details.

Then below it the CD one, but using a stripped down product layout that only shows something like "Also supply on CD at £n.nn" and the Quantity box.

You'll be able to enter independent quantities and will get one Add to Cart button at the bottom of the page.

May thanks for taking the time Norman, it's my first post today, but I've read and used many of your helpful replies previously.
This would be OK although I have some pages with up to four products (under one heading in the menu), which was where my scruffiness came in. However, if there isn't a way to put the option in, I'll code each 'pair' CD/download products as you suggest, to make it appear that they're two options of the same product, if you see what I mean. - I could also reorganise the products to put less on each page

Been thinking about this. I'm just looking to see if I can remove the dotted line at the bottom of the main download layout (basic - image on left) and the CD will then appear to be an option for the download above it

That probably comes from the Product List Layout for the Section.

Change it in Section Details / Layout / Product / Product List Layout from Product List With Horizontal Dividers to Standard Product List and away they go.
